MEIDS exists because a working unit had problems that no off-the-shelf product was solving. Every module in it answers something that actually went wrong on a real watch.
From four audit findings to nine modules
In 2017 an internal review at an operational ATC unit flagged the same problems most units live with: too much paper at the position, temporary instructions that weren't reaching controllers, information nobody could find quickly, and no guarantee that what was being read was the current edition.
The radar operations room was already using a handful of HTML pages on a touchscreen, but it was awkward to operate and limited in what it could do. At the same time the room was being redesigned, and some of the older equipment simply wouldn't fit the new desks. Replicating that equipment in software became the keystone of the project — and an opportunity to close the audit findings at the same time.
MEIDS was built on web server technology with Chrome in kiosk mode. Almost as soon as it went in, people started asking whether it could solve other long-standing problems too. Building occupancy. Self-briefing. NOTAM and weather retrieval. ICAO 8585 tables. Competency and currency monitoring. It kept growing.
The most recent major addition is Electronic Position Monitoring, which lets controllers tap in to a position and produces genuinely accurate currency and training-time data as a result.
